Baxter Springs, KS Corner
The highway signs show both how historically important the area is and how deep the problems in the nearby Tar Creek area are.
Baxter Springs was the intersection of US 66 and US 166; an important junction on the mother road. US 69 crosses US 166 close by to the east. In 2008 US 66 is gone, but US 69 is undermined throughout the Tar Creek area and closed to truck traffic. Thus US 66 has become US 69A. At this time it is also KS 7 and US 69 because of construction, but the currently closed Kansas section of US 69 is scheduled to reopen shortly (http://511.ksdot.org/kanroadpublic/qryrpt/ClosedRoadsList.asp)
